This is where I add my daily thoughts

What to do when it rains on the outside dog show

The best shows are the inside dog shows, then you don´t have to worry about the weather and bring a lot of extras along.

Sometimes I bring my tent, it weighs 15 kg (about 30 pounds) and takes a lot of space in the car or the camper. So if the sun shines and my dogs enters early in the morning, I don´t bother about the tent. And what happens then? It starts raining of course . So then I found this little extra raincoat, it is flat in my luggage and weighs nothing.

The perfect little extra if the weather god is not with you in your daily plan.

How to tabletrain my dog. Part 1

My dogs love to be on the table – how do I train them?

The key to the love is, positive training. I start to train my puppies very early, about 5-7 weeks.

I have tables in different sizes, I also made constructions in different heights where I can put my larger table, when the legs are folded.

IMG_2947IMG_2946

To start with I use my large table with the legs folded, so the table is flat on the floor, the larger the table the better. The basic idea is that “all the fun happens on the table”. Start with serving their food on the table, put in on the middle so that all paws need to leave the floor! Every time you reward your dog reward it on the table! It takes a puppy about 1 day to understand the benefit of being on the table. Have the table flat on the floor so the dogs can jump up and down whenever they want!

IMG_2932

As soon as the dog is relaxed on the table, go on to the next step! (the table is still flat on the floor). Play around with the dog on the table so it moves around freely without tension. Either you put a candy in each corner, so the dog needs to walk around on it, or make it play with a toy, like the working dog trainers do with their dogs. It took me many years to understand the benefit of teaching my dogs to struggle with a toy, but I really recommend it. The most difficult dogs to train are the dogs not interested in candy nor in playing with a toy. But remember every time you want the dog to be on the table there must be a candy, even when you train on higher levels.

The best time to train your dog is right before it is fed, because that is when it it motivated for food

Parallel with this I teach my dogs “stand for the candyhand”. This training is done on the floor or outside on the ground, NOT on the table. The “candyhand” is when you press your right indexfinger towards the middle of the thumb. The rest of the fingers are folded together holding the candy. I use meatballs, because it is easy for the dog to grab a small bite and eating it fast without taking time for chewing.

IMG_2939

When I hold my hand like this, it is a sign for my dog to stop. If you imagine the movement of the hand like a clock, where 12 o´clock is straight up, 6 o´clock straight down, you should position your hand at 2 o´clock, Slightly in front of the dog and up in the air, so it stops naturally. To start with the dog in going to jump for the hand, but do not correct the dog with your voice! Just ignore it and turn around in a circle turning to the right, like you do in the showring. Let the dog chase your hand, raise it until you find the stop position.

IMG_2952

As soon as it stops with it ears up for expectation, “flick” your fingers and give reward!

IMG_2943

This is where the first trick is. You need to be able to do the “flick” extremely fast, in 1 second you must be able to do 3 “flicks” that is how fast you need to be doing it. Second trick is your timing, the 10th of a second you dog shows expectation and raise its ears, you need to flick your fingers and give the reward instantly, even if it sits down.

Never ever reward a dog that not shows expectation, just to “keep it happy”, then you teach the dog the wrong behavior.

When the “flick” is done, make the dog take one step forward to get the candy. The dog needs to always think forward to get the right expression (exaggerated, left picture below). Don´t give the reward to the dog so it starts to think backward (right picture).

IMG_2957IMG_2960

When the dog and you found the “stop position”, it is time to combine it with the table. Keep the table legs folded or use a table with short legs. Put a candy on the table (or probably the dog is standing on the table already). Make it jump on the table and make it walk around freely, without a leash, do the “stop position” with your hand and be fast to look for the expectation and reward! Don´t bother if your dog is sitting down or i standing incorrectly. Right now you are teaching “expectation”. Let the dog jump down on the ground and play! When I train my dogs I do it very short and concentrated, maybe 3-5 minutes but instead 2 -4 times a day.

Freestanding or handstacking?

Dogs are like humans, they are all different

They have different temper, they have different construction, one is not equal to the other. There is never one single path to go and you have to chose which way is the best way for presenting each single dog.

I usually start with identifying the energy level, is this a dogs that needs more energy in its presentation or does it need a bit less energy? I have a happy little female galloping around wagging her tail constantly, show after show. I trained and trained and she got happier and happier every time, she pulled nicely in the leash in front of me but always in galopp. People gave me all sorts of strange advise, like “give her more food so she gets fat and have less condition and don´t want to galopp”. This is how she looked in the middle of her “galoppingseason” :-)  Look at her muscles on her hind legs and watch her tail moving!

Finally I realized where the problem was, it was me. I am an energetic person and I transferred my energy to my dog. So next show I put my mind into that I was going on a funeral. I walked slowly in a kind of slowmotion, moved my body slower and did not play around with her in the ring or try to get her be happy. Three shows later she trots happily around in the ring! This female I am able to both free stand or handstack. She is just happy with both.

Freestanding

Then there are dogs with a low energy level that you have to add more energy and self confidence in ring.  This female pulls lovely in the leach and trot fast in front of me with her tail up, but she does not like when I touch her or move her legs, in the standing, then she looses her posture and almost falls apart. She is the free standing type.

She finds her balance by herself and don´t like if I try to help her. She is the only dog I show totally differently. I keep my “candy hand” in position in front of her, “flick” my fingers and let her take one step forward with her front paws to get in balance.

With young dogs or dogs with a bit low self-confidence, I always stand in front of the dog when the judge examines the dog, to make the dog “thinking forward” and not pushing itself sidewards towards me.

Handstacking

Sometimes there are dogs that you want to stand a certain way, to fool the eye. They might stand in balance and look nice, but they might have a construction that you want to hide or at least not highlight to the judge. Those dogs might be better to handstack if the temper allows it. Here is a female with the best temper ever, she loves showing herself to everybody and is the “queen” in the ring. But she is a bit long loin, on females it is allowed to a certain point, but in this case I try to not exaggerate that part. Sometimes when she sands freely she becomes  to angulated in her hooks. I really need to train in front of the mirror with this female. Look how different positions can change the look of your dog!

Whatever way you chose to use on your dog, remember the most important advise!

Never ever reward a dog that not shows “expectation”, then you have taught the dog  the wrong behavior.

This is the most usual fault in training dogs, to keep giving it candy while doing nothing, with the intention to just to keep it happy in the ring.

“A few words of Valery L .. Until now, I can not get over the news of the sudden death of the Chairman of the NPC” Russian Toy “Valery L. Novikov. I did not know him personally but our ways crossed a couple of times at major dog shows, but we didn´t talked so much . But I got the impression that he was a deeply familiar and dear person. Probably because we were both “fan” of the same breed. In all that concerned Russkiy Toy, Valery Leonidovich was an uncomplicated man – he can call, write, and did not ask stupid questions and he always responded with the utmost care, was far from our “inbreeding” showdown, equally valid and “right” and “left.” And it was a rare breeder who saw the arrival of two decades, its change, development, pitfalls.
He defended our standard and interests of the breed, last year he published (thank good) an excellent book about the breed of Russkiy Toy and then completely donated the original text to colleagues in Sweden, for translation and further distribution among breeders in other countries. How much more interesting, useful and necessary, he would have had to do …. Seen last Valery L. personally and see his skill, I turn in the Czech Republic at the European Championships in 2014. He has happy and pleasant and very positive! Graduating with his signature, I gained, but the book did not have time to write all collected and postpone ….
I want to share with you, my friends, the interview, which Valery Leonidovich Novikov gave a few years ago, unfortunately, it has not been published. He spoke on the introduction of new colors in the standard. Changes in the standard of the breed “Russkiy Toy” What kind of dogs can be called cream? Why not submit a more conventional “fawn”? – Since the word “fawn” exclusively Russian-speaking and it is extremely difficult translated into other languages. The word “fawn”, it is understandable to us, in our understanding, the color is slightly singed, roasted cakes or pancakes, a dog sense means the colors are “very light – red” or “drop” or very “light straw”. In most European and other countries close to the normal red-haired dog. For us it is called red and pale red, we have called “pale yellow”, called the “cream”. The word “pale” for the majority of foreign experts is unclear. Change to “cream” – it is just one step in the direction of global unification KENNEL terminology. Why is it that for a long time fawn dog where shown, received the title of grand champion? Despite the fact that such color does not exist in the standard. This is a continuation of a subject. Fawn never, as now, was not prohibited standard, and was not considered a fault, except when would absolutely pale, not juicy, almost white or dirty-gray tone, which, however, also be a drawback, but still acceptable for awarding the title of “Champion” . Standard FCI all varieties of red colors, from very light, light straw, that actually black & brown – red with a significant amount of ink, and only a very dark red indicates only a phrase “red of any shade,” because the FCI standard requires brief. The word “cream” – this is just an update to the standards for light colors. The origins of color “Fawn – cream” – where he appeared in the rock? Initially, the main color of our breed was black and tan, and no other color.
The breed has a long history and a new story. Prehistory is that our toy, without doubt, are the descendants of the English toy terrier, which was brought to Russia in the beginning and throughout the 19th and early 20th century. At the time, exhibition catalogs under the name “toy terrier” refers to all small terriers, white and British, and Manchester, but of course, among all of them dominated by real English toy. English toy previously, today, only has one color – black and tan. Even under Stalin’s rule 30-50 century, when the breed in our country was near degeneration, and there was no core population, no one even thought about changing color. In the late 50’s – early 60’s because of the explicit expansion of our breed imported from Germany, our dogs were caught, often without pedigree documents, brown and tan and red German pinscher and, quite likely (red with black) Pekingese in the rock, new colors. These were the colors red (as it is often called the “deer”), and brown and tan. Fawn then still ruled. This lighter-red color, of course, determined by the presence of the gene in the genotype chinchilla color such for our breed to the time uncharacteristically, appeared in the breed primarily only in 70-80 years, when our country has evolved quite a large population of Chihuahua and of course, due to the expansion chihuahua in our breed. Many of us remember in the late 90s, one of our well-known breeder on “Eurasia” has brought a whole elegant white and yellowish, the whiter, sold as chihuahua, the yellow – as Toy. Most modern fawn dogs is likely to originate from Lipetsk Kostya animal or Sverdlovsk Kudrin. Modern pale Russkiy toy suspected crossing with chihuahua was obviously out of place – almost certainly between them and chihuahua, give them this gene weakening color, at least three generations of this toy listed in their pedigrees. Here, however, I think it amusing to recall a fact. As you know, the leader of the leading toy in the Soviet Union until the early 90’s was undoubtedly MGOLS. And until then smooth toys, then meticulously-called “English toy terrier”, although they were not at all similar with the Moscow Longhaired Toy Terrier. They  were fundamentally different breeds, although and sometimes by mutual binding, which was officially recognized. So. Lukin Olga told me that in the late 80s at a meeting Plemkomissii MGOLS considering banning the breed “English Toy Terrier” (in the modern sense of the Russian smooth coat) anything other than black and tan color.
What new changes will appear in the standard? Russia? Other countries? Recent changes in the standards relate only to exhibitions in Russia, which does not have the status of international (SAS1V). These changes will be incorporated in the FCI standard, but not before 2016, when our standard finally will be accepted. Although these changes is only without importance on exhibitions. Maybe these rules will also be considered in some neighboring countries. Why were changes made to the standard? Since, as appropriate. The main task was much set the state to legitimize the existence of the breed isabella color and set options for introducing blue and isabella down of red and brown tone. Why is the new standard brown color of the drawbacks moved into standard colors and black – a disqualification? All solid colors are determined by the presence of the same genotype dominant gene as uncharacteristic of our breed and disposed of genotype breed. Of course, the dominant gene is easily recognizable in the phenotype of the individuals (unless blocked by a combination of genes, which is very unlikely). Therefore, breeders, as in our breed was originally brought this gene is almost certainly that black sneezing, presented to us. Solid black color easy to recognize. But, be careful – you should always take a close look at the tail –  the least brighter color near the anus means that this is a black and tan dog with a very darkened tan. Other solid colors as well, of course, it would be good as a carrier of the gene of As from breeding erased. But, as it turned out, their identification and their ability to differentiate, for example, solid brown from reddish brown,  often cause difficulties to many judges.
Therefore, given the current interests of our breed at the mixture of brown, blue and isabella colors, it really is better to breed dogs with a combination of genes that determine the manifestations of these colors, rather than to exclude them from breeding in seeking recovery As the gene. It should be clarified that the gene for it is absolutely dominant and with his great insight into the genotype of the breed all our toy, the tan, red and sable, because of their presence in the genotype to be as much black. Of course, one could argue, that for example, that chihuahua color is not prohibited, but the colors are retained. But they have a different situation – they have a variety of colors is infinitely large, and all colors except may be diluted or completely hide the white spots. Any color is allowed – for example at chihuahua tradition. In our breed we have other traditions – we have long established permitted colors, and we are not authorized to change it.
We only temporary keeper of our breed, we must improve the breed, but not change it. Who developed the change in the standard, the reasons behind these changes? Great progress has been made by me, Valery Novikov and a member of the Commission on Standards VCF Irina L. This project is later corrected and approved at the committee meeting VCF. In the revised standards beside the standard color appeared additionally applicable definition of tan markings. Does this mean that the judges will be more strictly with judging the tan markings? Not at all. Attitude to figure tan markings in all colors and has long understood the same for all judges. What do you think, how good are oriented judges in Russkiy toy colors? Who is going to “educate” them for addition to the standard? First of all, I repeat once again that there are no major changes, in addition to lowering the solid black for disqualification. It’s just a clarification of the mutual combinations have long been known colors. Different judges are oriented in the color Toy in different ways and there’s nothing you can do. We have adopted amendments will be published in the Bulletin and on the website of the VCF VCF as official information. Define the colors black & brown and sable. They differ from red to black. Basic differences between the outer black & yellow and red with black as far as the dark tone color no. But the legacy of these colors are significant differences.
The German Shepherd, Airedales, and many other species presence Cheprak (like a black curtain at the back) is determined by the presence of the gene Asa, while Russian Toy, longhaired often, it is caused by the presence of genes Aya Tue combination with certain polygenic influence. Sable color – is fundamentally different color. This is one of the varieties of color type “agouti”. This is where almost every hair of the dog under close examination, even without a microscope, is a continuous series of painted and unpainted areas. This kind of color is called “agouti” in analogy with the American rodent that looks like a cross between a guinea pig and a protein of similar pigmentation of hair. The most convenient way to consider this type of wool hairs on the Mittel and toys. For the gray color combination is characteristic variability in the length of hair dark pigment areas and light, only red. In different parts of the body presence of darker and lighter zones of different hairs. On the neck turns a darker color, and on the caudal surface of the extremities – lighter. Any variations in colors such as agouti in our breed unwanted, found mainly in primitive type dogs and always suggests a close relationship with small mestizo. The intensity of the black color red with black – black as it should be? Combinations can be completely different from two or three hairs on ears to look almost black & yellow color – it’s all very nice, and none of these alternatives is not intended priorities. Do any color with enough perseverance, possible to enter in the standard? What colors can not be specified in the standard? Color is the most important breed characteristics of each breed.
In our breed such a question seems to be relatively adequate and yet … In my presentation of the original base color Russian Toy – black and tan. All other colors later – it handles are molded in our breed bloodlines of certain species or small mongrel mestizo happened long ago or relatively recently. Absolutely can it not be argued, but we can say with a high degree of probability that the 50’s red and brown colors in our breed was brought by Pinscher, sable and long-haired with feathering on the ears during those years, we were presented with Pekingese, yellow and black – it is almost certain gifts from chihuahuas in the 70s and later, blue color – a gift of Italian greyhounds, brindle – gave certainly Chikhi, marble – almost certainly sheltie, although perhaps Chikhi and marble, which is unlikely because of their low abundance in the Russian population. Some colored, has long been familiar to us, all kinds of brown and red tones all, including fawn and very dark sable and blue and in various combinations with red and brown and – Isabella (bb dd) – the colors, long ago in our breed is quite native. These colors anchored in our breed for a long time, especially for us, in the days of its formation. Every dog with an unusual color for the breed, harlequin, brindle, piebald, or any solid agouti (solid black or any other firm) is undoubtedly a relatively thoroughbred TOEM, yet everything is more to this concept corresponds to its external and mental parameters but immensely half or a quarter ounce with another breed. In our time, when the rock is in the mature state and has consistently balanced genotype, sudden external shocks nature of species could lead to the destabilization of genotype toy. Therefore, it would be desirable, if possible, avoided. Yet everything is possible in the heavenly world.
Of course, you can just write that chihuahua, “allowe all colors.” Especially because of someone’s immediate personal interests. This is possible, but only after me. To honor the tradition of rock – for me one of the most important tasks. The new standard is no red color with brown – we can assume that he is now fit the definition of any shade of brown? Obviously.
As an expert should assess the colors are the disadvantages? Reduce the assessment? Title to the experts? Title for the assessment of expert or reduce the assessment to the discretion of the expert and, depending on the severity of the error. So it is accepted worldwide in all breeds with regard to all levels of flaws “flaws”. Do you, as a judge, want a point system for the review of the Russian breed? For example, the head – 5 points the body – 10 points, and so on. Gives you great significance for the color in the survey? No. Dog whole are, and must be assessed as a whole. The proposed issue is very similar to “what do you think of fried chicken? The neck or wing.” But I think it is the right of the survey to take clear accents in accordance with the fundamental problems in the development of the breed of the moment. Now in our breed in most dogs, but very different, but in general, very decent pedigree head. Apart from the need for special attention to the ears and of overgrown coat. But in relation to the total addition to the well-being still far away. Even the top, especially in movement, good angles and parallel limbs, tail, and especially the front, sleek and sweeping, despite the growth of microscopic movements deserves special attention, without any leniency, each expert and breeder. Russian toy – it’s not Hunchback disabled on crooked legs with a nice little head, it is a true very full, but very small, with chiseled small head and meaningful expression in the eyes, the dog.
